Ceph fundamentals

RADOS, OSDs and the services above them.

A cluster instead of a single storage box

Ceph pools storage devices across multiple machines. Applications see a storage service while the cluster handles the distribution of data. This separates growth from the limits of a single chassis, but introduces distributed-system responsibilities.

What the main components do

RADOS is the distributed object-storage foundation. OSDs store objects and participate in replication and recovery. Monitors maintain cluster maps and quorum; managers provide management and monitoring functions. CephFS also uses metadata servers. These roles are services, not a requirement for one dedicated physical server per role.

Choose the application interface first

RBD presents block devices, CephFS provides a shared filesystem, and RGW exposes S3-compatible object access. These interfaces serve different application models. Sharing a block volume between hosts does not automatically make its filesystem safe for concurrent access.

From a concept to an operating service

Write down how clients connect, who administers the cluster and how recovery is tested. A production design also needs monitoring, planned maintenance and independent backups. A management platform can simplify routine tasks; workload and failure planning still remain essential.
